Can Someone Else Drive Your Insured Vehicle?
Someone else may be able to drive your vehicle, but only if your policy permits that driver and the circumstances. A valid licence and your permission are important; they do not by themselves establish insurance cover.
Read the driver clause
The certificate and schedule may restrict driving to named people or define a wider permitted group. Check age, licence and experience conditions. If you cannot identify the clause that allows a proposed driver, obtain written confirmation before lending the vehicle.
Extra excesses can apply
A policy may apply an additional excess for certain drivers even when they are allowed to drive. Ask what you would contribute if that person crashed. Also confirm that the journey’s purpose is within the permitted use.
Regular drivers should be disclosed
Tell your representative if a spouse, child, employee or friend will drive regularly. Explain who is the main driver and whether any work or paid passenger use is involved. Update the arrangement when circumstances change.
Before handing over the keys
Check the licence, confirm permission under the policy and discuss what to do after an accident. Keep the insurer’s contact information available. Another person’s policy that says they may drive other vehicles should also be checked carefully for limitations.
Frequently asked questions
Does a named-driver policy cover all relatives?
Only if the wording permits them. Family relationship alone does not establish cover.
Can I add a driver later?
Ask for an endorsement and confirmation of the effective date before that person drives.
