Third-Party vs Comprehensive Car Insurance in Dominica: What’s the Difference?
Third-party-only insurance generally addresses your legal liability to other people. Comprehensive insurance adds protection for specified damage to your own vehicle. The important difference is whose loss the policy can pay for, subject to its terms.
What third-party-only means
If you cause an accident, third-party cover may respond to covered injury or property-damage liability. It generally does not pay your own collision repair bill. Check the liability limits and permitted drivers: buying a certificate does not remove those conditions.
What comprehensive adds
Comprehensive policies commonly include own-vehicle collision, fire and theft alongside third-party liability. Benefits and exclusions vary. Windscreen protection, hurricane or flood damage, towing and replacement transport should be checked individually rather than assumed from the word comprehensive.
Choose using your financial exposure
Imagine your vehicle is severely damaged tomorrow. Could you pay for repairs or replacement without disrupting essential household spending? Compare that potential burden with the premium and excess. A financed vehicle may also be subject to a lender’s coverage requirements.
Questions before accepting
Ask for the schedule and policy wording. Confirm who may drive, what use is allowed, how a total loss is valued and which excess applies. Keep the quotation so you can compare the same terms at renewal.
Frequently asked questions
Does third-party include theft?
Third-party-only generally does not. A separate third-party fire-and-theft product, where offered, is different.
Does comprehensive mean every loss is covered?
No. Exclusions, limits, conditions and deductibles still apply.
