What Happens When Your Vehicle Is Written Off?

What Happens When Your Vehicle Is Written Off?

A write-off or total loss means the insurer considers settlement on a total-loss basis under the policy, rather than an ordinary repair. It does not automatically mean you receive the figure you originally paid or the outstanding loan balance.

Understand the decision

An assessor may examine damage, safety, repair cost, parts and the vehicle’s value. Ask for the basis of the decision and how the policy defines the settlement. A visibly damaged vehicle is not enough on its own to establish the payable amount.

Review the proposed figure

Request the valuation basis and applicable deductions, including excess and any other policy adjustment. Provide supporting evidence if you dispute the value. Do not assume a loan balance equals the insured vehicle’s value.

Financed vehicles and salvage

A lender’s interest may affect payment arrangements and required documents. Ask who receives the settlement and what happens to the remaining loan. Clarify ownership of salvage before selling, removing parts or handing over the vehicle.

Documents before settlement

You may need ownership documents, keys and finance-related releases or undertakings. Keep copies and ask for a complete list. Read any release carefully so you understand what is being settled.

Frequently asked questions

Will the payout clear my loan?

It may not. The loan and policy settlement are separate obligations.

Can I keep the damaged vehicle?

Ask whether salvage retention is allowed and how it changes the settlement.
