Does Third-Party Insurance Pay to Repair Your Own Vehicle?
Third-party-only insurance generally does not pay to repair your own car after a collision. It mainly protects against covered liability to other people. This distinction matters even when your vehicle is essential for getting to work.
If you cause the accident
Your insurer may address covered third-party injury or property-damage claims, within the policy terms. Your own repairs will generally be your responsibility under third-party-only cover. Check separately if your product includes any additional named benefits.
If another driver is responsible
You may be able to pursue a claim against the responsible driver or their insurer. That is different from having own-damage cover under your policy. Liability, evidence and the other party’s cover must be assessed, so payment is not automatic.
If responsibility is disputed
Photographs, witness details, a factual account and any police documentation can help. Notify your own insurer promptly even if you expect the other party to pay. Avoid authorising settlements or signing releases without understanding the effect.
Decide before a loss happens
Compare the annual saving from third-party-only cover with the potential cost of losing your car. Ask for comprehensive terms and examine the excess. Choosing less cover is a financial decision that should be made with the possible repair bill in mind.
Frequently asked questions
What about fire or theft?
Third-party fire-and-theft, where offered, is a different product from third-party-only.
Will my insurer recover my repair money?
Ask what assistance is available. It is not the same as a guarantee that your own loss is covered.
